Patria: Nihil est monastica

14/05/13  ||  sincan

Some time ago I felt an urge for some killer black metal and at the same moment this album was sent to Global Domination. By reading the information about the band I felt like this could actually be what I was looking for. I’m lying if I say that it was. Oh, and for you who doesn’t appreciate the trve and cvlt type of production, fokkoff.

Patria is a black metal constellation hailing from Brazil playing what best could be described as old school primitive black metal. The most primitive detail must be how the vocals have been recorded and produced. Well I see for what cause, but I think that they’re actually doing more damage than good, at least in terms of production. They’re a bit too lo-fi and a bit too fucking high in the mix.

Everything else typical for the genre is there and I think that some of you out there gets the hardest of erection while listening to stuff like this. The musicianship is indeed pretty competent and not much can be blamed.

However, the songwriting is not always ace and while some tracks are pretty good and keeps your interest up like Nyctophilia others are just passing by without leaving anything left except the feeling that something recently happened and you can’t remember what. It is my humble opinion (that is; le fact) that some tracks should have been left out thus making the album shorter.

I also think that Patria might get better with time, as by releasing more stuff, since looking backwards in these times is a pretty wise choice. This is especially true for the black metal scene since most of the good stuff came back then. Ah, let’s put in another, more progressive, track Till death just for the cause of showing some variety.

If you don’t appreciate the two linked tracks I’m pretty fucking sure that you will not like the rest. If you did enjoy it, why not try the rest. Oh and the last track, a Sarcófago cover, pretty much reminds me of the Nifelheim track “Open the gates of damnation” but never reaching the chorus, if you did wonder.
